2002 PIM Awards...ROI Takes Three
The Maryland Printing Industries Annual Awards contest for 2002 just concluded and ROI came out on top. We walked away with three Best Of Category awards for a 4-color process clear film bottle wrap label, a flexible package for cosmetic makeup and a 4-color process cosmetic fragrance sample on 7-pt. board. Attached is a flyer displaying the award winning pieces.

The product on the left side of the attached sheet, Azzaro Men’s Fragrance, had a high degree of printing difficulty. This product required thinking, creativity, and a lot of careful work by our prep house to make sure the color separations were done properly. Traditionally, this type of product is printed offset in order to achieve the high quality look that cosmetic company’s demand. However, high cost is associated with offset printing of these samples. So our customer, Arcade Marketing Cp. gave ROI the opportunity to demonstrate our abilities and prove how far flexography has come over the years. As you can see, we were able to achieve the high quality printing the customer was looking for at a fraction of the cost. Next time you are visiting ROI, be sure to check out our display case in the lobby and see if you can pick out the offset printed piece among all of our work!

The second product that received an award was the 4-color process bottle wrap label printed for Cott Beverage USA. This type of label is becoming ever more popular at ROI with more colors and high end graphics becoming the norm. High quality process work with a few spot colors on clear film allows our customers products to be seen through the label and stand out on the shelf. They require tight registration and a press with multiple colors like our 22” 12-color Comco. What’s next? It is hard to say, but in today’s competitive market I would not be surprised to see more metalized and holographic materials used to increase shelf appeal (see 4th edition AdVisory for more info. on specialized material).

Finally, the last winner in the group is a 10-color heat seal package that used all the bells and whistles on our Comco press. It required the use of almost all our print stations plus chill rollers to prevent pre-shrinking of the material. The chill rollers allow the web temperature to remain consistent throughout the entire press run to prevent any shrinking of the material. This will also be used when printing on the new high shrink (65%) film soon to be available at ROI (keep a look-out for upcoming AdVisory). Special heat resistant inks and several hits of white were needed to achieve the opacity required. With two windows in the package to allow the customer to view the product, tight registration was required - not to mention we needed to match the color of the cosmetic on the inside with the printed rectangle bar on the outside of the package. A very challenging and exciting project for ROI that was recognized by the PIM judges.

These three products and awards define much of what ROI is all about. We are always looking for new and challenging ideas that require creative thinking and ingenuity. If you are looking to increase your sales by changing your product packaging, be sure to give us a call first. It is much easier to design a package that you know can be produced, than to create a package everyone loves but is either too expensive or is not even possible to produce.

So, over the next year, you will be sure to see the “Q” on a lot of our communication pieces. It represents our pride in being recognized as an outstanding printer in Maryland.
